With 3D art, the best works have a really advanced, highly detailed but identifiable form. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that you can't make something that's out of this world and doesn't compy with our physical rules. It just may be harder for people to identify and associate with it. A freind of mine ([link]) recently submitted a deviation worked from a 3D model. "jiko" I think it's called. He seems to have done the same thing, going a bit too far out without really definate planning.
Both ideas are great, they just need to be worked on more before deciding on it. In your case you could ask yourself when desinging this peice "What things make up heaven?", "If I want to represent another side to heaven how would it differ from the origional?" and "Can this other side of heaven be accuratly represented as a object, being, or landscape?".
Sorry if this may seem a little oppressive, it's just my thoughts on how you can improve your work.

And TigaV I understand what you mean. It seemed good at the moment, but now i have second thoughts about this image with the question "what things make up heaven?".
its still a cool image
